Automation Technician

The Automation Technician will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing automated container handling equipment, including cranes, straddle carriers, and automated yard access systems. This role will require technical expertise in industrial automation systems, with a focus on ensuring minimal downtime and efficient operations at our state-of-the-art terminal.

Main tasks and responsibilities

Automation Technician Duties

  • Perform  regular  maintenance, update  systems,  diagnostics,  investigations  and  repair  of  automated systems  such  as Automated  Rail  Mounted  Gantry  Cranes  (ARMGs),  Straddle  Carriers,  and  other terminal equipment. 
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical, mechanical, and control system issues to minimize downtime.  
  • Perform   calibration   and   adjustment   of   sensors,   drives,   and   actuators   on   automated   handling equipment.  
  • Undertake unplanned repairs/tasks in a timely manner to required standards.  
  • Utilize  PLC  programming  tools  such  as  Siemens  Step  7,  Tia  Portal,  and  Omron  CX-One  to  diagnose and adjust control systems.  
  • Accurate & timely completion of designated job & service records.
  • Record machine Statistics and service data as required  
  • Maintain and record an accurate timesheet of events  
  • Operation of Safety “tag out/lock out” process.  
  • Risk & hazard assessment as associated with allocated tasks.  
  • Liaise  with  &  assist  any  specialist  contractors  or  providers  engaged  by  the  Business  with  respect  to works, as appropriate.  
  • Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with company OHS&E regulations.

Cleanliness    

  • Ensure the working area is kept in a clean and tidy condition.  
  • Ensure that tools and equipment supplied by the company are kept clean and in good condition.

Administration  

  • Complete all relevant paperwork and software data accurately and in a timely manner.

Client Relationship  

  • Represent the company in a professional manner to meet the client’s expectations.

Other  

  • Other tasks as directed by Site Supervisor  
  • Comply with Code of Conduct requirements  
  • Report for work in a fit state and not under the influence of Alcohol or Drugs  
  • Perform all duties with honesty and integrity

What you’ll need to succeed

Education

Required  

  • Australian electrical License (Unrestricted)  
  • Current car driver’s license  
  • High Risk license for Elevated Work Platform

Preferred  

  • Forklift operator’s license  
  • WAH   Boom lift above 11m’

Experience  

  • Minimum 10 years post apprenticeship experience: specializing in fault finding, repairs and PM Service on heavy plant, maritime and or industrial cranes and or automated manufacturing environments.  
  • Experience dealing with programmable logic controllers (Siemens step 7/TIA portal, Omron).
  • Container or intermodal terminal asset maintenance experience  
  • Experience and understanding of various communication protocols (TCP/IP, Profinet, CAN bus).  
  • Familiarity with surveying equipment for calibrating crane positioning/sensors is considered beneficial.
